Owlstone Inc. Awarded Next Generation Chemical Detector (NGCD) Prototype Phase II for the US DOD’s JPEO-CBD

Published on 23 Nov 15

Norwalk, CT, November 23 2015: Owlstone Inc., previously awarded a contract for the US Department of Defense’s (DOD) Next Generation Chemical Detector (NGCD) program, announced today it has been notified that the Joint Program Executive Office for Chemical and Biological Defense (JPEO-CBD) will exercise its second option under the NGCD contract. After completing the initial testing, and then determining project feasibility under Phase I, Owlstone has received formal approval to move to the prototype phase under the second option of the NGCD program.

JPEO-CBD’s NGCD program is funding a new family of products capable of detecting a wide variety of chemical warfare agents (CWAs). Under the multimillion-dollar contract, Owlstone will add new features to NGCD, its advanced chemical detection (CD) platform, while reducing size and weight and increasing power to deliver the highest level of sensitivity and selectivity ever achieved in a portable, self-contained unit.

During the Phase II stage of the NGCD program, valued at 4.4M, Owlstone will build a prototype for testing in winter 2015/spring 2016. The prototype will demonstrate critical technology such as extended-duration hazard monitoring, easy integration with other sensors (e.g., RAD & BIO) and third-party systems, and capabilities for adding new threats to the detection library.  In particular, the NGCD detection database is being expanded to include an extensive range of Toxic Industrial Chemicals (TICs).

The protection of US military servicemen and women from exposure to chemical threats constitutes a core focus for Owlstone. NGCD will provide powerful functionality to help ensure situational awareness and increase safety for today’s soldiers.
